The City of Needles Waste water Department manages the City’s sewer collection system, which includes sewer lines, lift stations, and a wastewater treatment plant. The system was first established in 1950 and has since expanded to serve the community’s needs. Wastewater is treated and filtered through the treatment plant and percolation ponds, where it is naturally returned to the ground. While most areas are connected to the sewer system, some locations still rely on septic systems.

For other questions, please contact the Department at (760) 326-2891.

The system includes 19.25 miles of sewer lines, 3.6 miles of force main, 4 lift stations, 390 manholes, and a 1.2 million gallon per day (MGD) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The system was first installed in 1950, replacing cesspools that were previously used. Evidence of these cesspools and abandoned septic systems can still be found in the older parts of town.

The City has 4 lift stations located on K Street, Bazoobuth & Quivera Street, River Road & Jack Smith Park. Once wastewater reaches the WWTP, the effluent water is pumped to the city’s Percolation Ponds behind Bashas Center, where it percolates back into the ground, completing the cycle.

Sewer service in Needles extends as far as Victory Drive & Cherry on the south side and Pashard Ave on the north side. Areas outside of these service zones, particularly in North Needles along the river, still rely on septic systems.
